Obituary (1930) RITES FOR PROMINENT MAN HELD - Funeral Services Conducted Today for C.H. Ainley, 24-Year Resident --
Funeral services were held today from the First Methodist church for Charles H Ainley, prominent Monrovian, who died at a Los Angeles hospital this week.
Dr Fletcher G. Watson, pastor of the church, officiated, assisted by Rev. Charles Kent, of Pasadena, and Rev. A.B. DeRoos, of Mexico City. Interment was made in Live Oak cemetery.
Charles H Ainley was born at Lee, Mass., April 3, 1853, of sturdy English stock, his parents being Jonas Ainley and Ellen Thornton Ainley. His father was a foreman in the woolen mills of England, and later in New England, where several members of the family were employed. Charles began work in the woolen mills at the age of six and continued until 16 years of age, when he moved with his family to Des Moines, Iowa, securing employment as freight handler in the freight house of the Rock Island Railroad company, assurming adult responsibilities in the support of the family.
His education was secured under great difficulities , much of it being acquired by attendance at night school. A few years later he was given a position of important responsibility in an abstruct offical and bank at Panora, Iowa, which he held for several years. From here he went to Perry, Iowa, and entered the retail handware business in which he was engaged for 17 years. He sold this business and moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where he became president of the Des Moines Fire Insurance company, a position he held until he sold his interests in 1907 to bringhis family to Monrovia, wher he has since lived.
Until 1914 he was for several years president of the American National Bank, and now the Monrovia Branch, Bank of America.
Mr Ainley was prominently identified with the First Methodist church during his residence in Monrovia, being president of the board of trustees for many years, and superintendent of the adult department. He was also prominent in the activities of the Southern California Sunday School Association, of which he was at one time president.
During the World War he was for a year and a half in Y.M.C.A. work, being stationed at Camp Kearney, near San Diego. Mr Ainley retired from active business in 1914, but continued a keen interest in every enterprise for the advancement of the moral and spiritual conditions fo the community in which he lived. Few men had a keener zest for living and for shar- (Turn to Page 4) missing.
