Hans Lien moved to Boy Island with Knute and Oliver Erickson in 1910 after reading in the newspapers about an opportunity to start a logging camp. They staked out homestead claims on the Island not far from a village of Chippewa Indians. Mrs. Lien and Mrs. Knute Erickson and nine children, along with the cattle and horses, came to Boy River on the first passenger and freight train in 1910.

Hans Lien was one of the original members of the Zion Lutheran Church. They purchased five acres of land for a new church in 1922. The church was never built, but the churchyard became the cemetery property. (Boy River History, 1998)
