A world-renowned literary critic, compiler of anthologies, writer, and poet. In 1910, she was the only female founding member of the Poetry Society of America. She later became the president and served as the organization's secretary for 10 years. Her poems were set to music by many composers. The Poetry Society of America presented Rittenhouse the first Robert Frost Medal in 1930, for "distinguished lifetime achievement in American Poetry." When she died in 1948, she left over 1,200 books of poetry and 1,400 letters of literary correspondence to Rollins College. Jessie Rittenhouse's college education was a gift from her Uncle Archibald MacArthur, who was impressed by her talent. Her husband, Clinton Scollard, was also a famous poet who issued 35 different publications including 11 books of poetry.
