February 1, 2012 note from Daniel Norton, "Probably the first mention in print of Jennie (Anderson) Mumford is in a well-known 1865 "Letter from a Freedman to His Old Master". Her father, Jordan Anderson, the author of this letter, describes the 14-year-old "Jane" as one of his two "good-looking" daughters. (The "V. Winters" mentioned in the letter is the great-great-grandfather of comedian Jonathan Winters.) A former slave born in Tennessee, Jennie's first mention (by name) in a US Census is with her childhood family in 1870. (Ward 8, Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, p. 44, line 23.)"
