Norma Jean Shanholtz, 81, Williamsburg, went home to be with the Lord early Thursday morning at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus.
She was born in Williamsburg, daughter of the late F. Talmadge and Edna M. (Evans) White. She married Don W. Shanholtz on July 9, 1955, in Williamsburg.
Surviving are her husband; two sons: David W. and wife, Julia, and Stephen W. and wife, Chris, all of Williamsburg; eight grandchildren; two sisters: Nancy Hertel and husband, Fred, of Hollidaysburg and Sharon Malone and husband, Bill, of Williamsburg; two brothers: the Rev. Dr. Duane and wife, Carmen Lee, of Clearfield and Terry and wife, Cheryl, of Williamsburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Joshua; and a brother, Franklin "Sonny."
Norma Jean was a 1948 graduate of Williamsburg High School, a 1952 graduate of Altoona Hospital School for Nursing and a 1961 graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where she earned her bachelor's degree in education. She retired as a school nurse for Williamsburg Community School District in 1985 after 31 years of service.
Norma Jean was a longtime member of Williamsburg Alliance Church, where she currently served as a deaconess and was a member and past president of the Alliance Women. She also formerly had served as church organist/pianist, youth group leader and Sunday school teacher. She was a former member of the Williamsburg BPW Club, formerly volunteered as coordinator of the Williamsburg Area Red Cross Blood Drive and was a director and secretary of the Williamsburg Area Salvation Army Unit.
She enjoyed reading the Bible, sending cards and cooking and baking for her family.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011, at Williamsburg Alliance Church, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, Pastor Paul R. Campbell officiating. Interment will follow at Royer Cemetery, rural Williamsburg.
