He was a graduate from West Point Military Academy on July 17, 1817 then resigned one year later (July 21, 1818) from the Marine Barracks, in Washington DC as a 2nd Lieut, Marines. In his private life he was a Counselor at Law in Orange Court House, Va., starting 1820. He was also a member of the House of Delegates of the State of Virginia.
