John D. Huhn enlisted in Company C, 7th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment on June 6, 1861. He served as third sergeant and was promoted to first sergeant in January 1864. In June 1864 he received multiple wounds to his head and arm at Brice's Crossroads. Soon after he was awarded for his gallantry with a promotion to regimental adjutant.
*regimental adjutant is the personal staff officer of the Commanding officer and as such has the authority of that officer when acting for them.
