Milton Bjorgan passed away Monday evening, October 10th, 2011 at Where The Heart Is in Burlington, Washington. Milt had just celebrated his 91st Birthday.
Milton Obert Tidemann Bjorgan was the first born and last surviving child of Oscar M. and Clara E.J. Bjorgan. He was born September 3rd, 1920 on the family farm near the then Norwegian community of Morefield (near Renner), South Dakota.
In third grade, the Thompson School switched from Norwegian to English as the primary and only language taught. He was confirmed in the West Nidaros Church in 1934.
Milt began his working career as a farm worker for various families in the community as well as working for the Morefield Store.
November 1941, he moved to Skagit County and took up residence on the Joseph Gunderson farm as a farm hand. It was there that he met Constance L. Nytroe, their niece and on November 7th, 1942, they were married. They established a residence in Riverside - Mount Vernon. He began working as a handyman for Pierson Dehydrating Company and built his family home on Chuckanut Drive north of Burlington, Washington.
In 1959 his interest in woodworking encouraged him to become a carpenter, and eventually a first class sawdust maker. His career saw numerous bosses and partners. Milt's shop grew from a simple two car garage to what it is today, and has seen countless pieces and projects throughout the years completed and added to many households in Washington State. If it was made out of wood, he could make it, and according to him the impossible projects just took "a couple of days longer".
After age 90, his shop time decreased considerably after a fall; however he did maintain interest in church projects by advising and overseeing, with his last major project of finishing the hand rails approaching the Burlington Lutheran Church altar.
Milton was a long time active member of the Burlington Lutheran Church. He was a retired volunteer fireman and fire chief of the Allen Fire Department. Milt was a member of the Carpenter's Local #1532 and an active member of the Mount Vernon Elks, BPOE #1604.
Milt is survived by his son, Randy (Margaret) Bjorgan, of Anchorage, AK; daughter, Carol (Gordon) Dahl, of Burlington, WA; grandchildren: Pamela Benti, of Wasilla, AK, Randy Bjorgan Jr., of Anchorage, Sandy (Brad) Johnson, of Mount Vernon, WA and Bill (Kali) Howard, of Sammamish, WA, and Andrew and Erik Dahl, of Minneapolis, MN; great-grandchild: Henry Johnson, of Mount Vernon; sisters-in-law: Lyla Bjorgan, of Seattle, WA, and Dege Bjorgan, of Vero Beach, FL; nieces: Sherry Melsby, of Sedro-Woolley, Joy (Bud) Carlisle, of Seattle, Jane Johnson, of Mount Vernon, Laurie Lane, of Fox Island, WA, Mali (Peggy) Bjorgan, of Copake, NY, and Mary Kay Riley, of Vero Beach, FL; and many dear and close friends.
