J.H. Thomas was the second oldest son of General Jackson Thomas and the oldest son of Amanda Carter. He and Viola lived for awhile in Plant City, FL where one son, Joseph Franklin is buried. He moved back to Appling County and purchased the family farm after his father's death. His second wife was Nona Coleman Fordham.
