Irwin C Hutchison was the son of Adolphus Hutchison and Mary Helen Campbell. He attended Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa, where he was a R.O.T.C. major.

He enlisted in the army three years before his death, and graduated from the air corps as a pilot in August of 1942. He was a Staff Sergeant in the US Army Air Corps.

Irwin was killed in the crash of an army paratroop transport plane at Lockhart Scar, South Carolina. He was the copilot of the plane in which two others were killed.

Irwin died at the young age of 21 years 2 months.
