Perry Gilbert Charged with the Murder of John Logan Bowman
Perry Gilbert of Lee County went to trial for murder in circuit Court yesterday. Gilbert is charged with having shot and killed Logan Bowman about three miles from Beattyville during the primary election august 6. The shooting is said to have occurred but a short distance away from a voting booth.
A brief night session was held last night.
Bowman died in a Lexington hospital two days following the shooting. An Indictment was then returned by the Fayette County Grand Jury against Gilbert charging him with murder.
The case was called when court convened yesterday morning and more than two hours were required before a jury was selected. Court attaches stated late yesterday afternoon that all of today would be required to complete hearing of the evidence. Arguments in all probability will be heard Friday morning.
A slight delay was caused to the jury had been selected owing to the illness of one of the jurors. The attack was but a temporary one and the case was immediately begun following the noon adjournment.
The defense maintains that the shooting of Bowman was not done by Gilbert, but occurred during a brawl which resulted from an argument over politics. The shot which killed Bowman according to the defense was fired by unidentified persons. More than twenty witnesses in the case are on hand, having arrived here from Lee County late Tuesday night.
