JOHN W. TOWNER, 85 DIES OF PNEUMONIA FUNERAL HELD ON WEDNESDAY Member of Well Known Family and Brother of Ex-Senator Succumbs at Home on Sunday. John W. Towner, brother of ex-Senator James E. Towner, died on Sunday, August 13, 1933, at his home on Prospect street in Brewster, following an illness of pneumonia of a few days' duration. He was in his 86th year. The deceased was a member of a well known family in Putnam County that has long been active in the social, political and business life. He was the eldest of five children born to Samuel and Huldah Wyatt Towner and was born Jan. 2, 1848 at the homestead in Patterson. He was engaged in farming in his younger days and in the late eighties became clerk of the board of supervisors which position he held for 33 years, resigning in 1917, when he retired from active work. When a young man he married Miss Emily Banks, a sister of Dr. George Banks, of Patterson, and about forty years ago they moved to Brewster where Mrs. Towner died about two years ago. Surviving Mr. Towner are three younger brothers and a sister, Charles H. of Yonkers; ex-Senator James E., of Towners; William A., of Wantagh, L.I., and Mrs. Mary E. Kent, of Patterson. He also leaves three sons, Eugene R., Dr. Wm. A., and W. Boynton Towner, and two daughters, Miss Grace E. and Miss Julia W. Towner, all of Brewster. Funeral services were held at his late home on Prospect street Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock and were conducted by Rev. H.H. Hazzard, of Sloatsburg, N.Y., formerly pastor of the Brewster M.E. church.
