Martin Leach, Fresno Auto Dealer, Drowns

Martin C. Leach, 61, long-time Fresno automobile dealer and civic leader, drowned late yesterday while fishing in the San Joaquin Delta area near Stockton.

Leach fell off the stern of his boat on the south fork of the Mokelumne River and disappeared in the murky choppy

water. San Joaquin County sheriff's officers, unable to locate the body last night, resumed dragging operations this morning.

With Leach on the boat was LaVerne T. Sorensen of 5821 Rancho Drive E., a contractor and long-time friend.

On Way Back
Sorensen said they had started fishing about 10:30 a.m., had run out of bait and were on the way back to the docking area when the accident occurred about 5:30 p.m.

He said a strong wind was blowing and that the boat was "bouncing hard" in whitecaps about 20 inches high. On the way back, Sorensen said, Leach stopped the boat momentarily and went to the stern.

"I don't think it was more than five seconds," he said. "I looked around and he was gone."

Unable To Swim
Sorensen said he tied a rope around his waist and went overboard in search of his companion but was unable to find any sign of him. He said that despite being an experienced boat handler, Leach was unable to swim.

A native of San Francisco, Leach had live in Fresno most of his life and had been in the automobile business nearly 35 years.

Two years agoe his sold his interest _____ Leach Chrysler-Plymounth _________ncy but continued in business with the Leach Leasing firme at 829 Abby St.

He started his career with the old James W. McAlister agency, a firm he later bought in partnership with another employee.

Active In War Drive
During World War II, Leach was active in the Fresno County War Chest campaign whose chief beneficiaries were the USO center for servicement. He was the organization's county chairman.

He also served as president on the Central California Employers Council, president of the Fresno Motor Car Dealers Association, chairman of the San Francisco Region Chrysler-Plymouth Dealer Council and president of the Fresno State College Golf Scholarship Foundation.

Leach was also active in the FSC Bulldog Foundation and at one time served as finance chairman of the Sequoia Boy Scout Council. He was a member of the University - Sequoia Sunnyside Club.

The family home is at 822 S. Claremont Dr.

Leach is survived by his widow, Edith; three sons, Douglas Martin Leach of Monterey, Martin Robert Leach, a student at Claremont College, and Andrew Martin, in the Navy assigned to the USS Princeton in the Far East; his mother, Mrs. Kate Hutchinson of Fresno, and two grandchildren.

Leach's Body Is Recovered

Funeral arrangements are pending for long-time automobile dealer Martin C. Leach, 61, whose body was recovered yesterday from the Mokelunme River near Stockton.

Leach drowned Thursday when he fell off the stern of his boat while on a fishing trip.

San Joaquin County sheriff's department spokesman said the body washed up on the north bank of the river near Terminus, a small town about 10 miles northwest of Stockton.

The Lisle Funeral Home will announce the arrangements.

Funeral services for Martin C. Leach, 61, of 822 S. Claremont Dr., a Fresno automobile dealer, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Lisle Calaveras Chapel.

Leach drowned last Thursday while fishing in the San Joaquin Delta area near Stockton.

Burial will be in the Belmont Memorial Park. The family requests that any rememberances be made in the form of donations to the Fresno State College Golf Scholarship Fund.
