Asher B. BASSFORD, one of our oldest residents, died at his home in Calais on Thursday morn. last age 72 years. His remains were interred on Friday afternoon by St. Croix Lodge F.& A.M. (St. Croix Courier, August 11, 1887)

In the 1860 U.S. Census, Ashur Bassford, 53, born Maine, was living in Ward 4, Calais, Maine, with Lucy J., 45, born N.B.; Levi S.L., 26; Edward P., 25; Laura M., 26; Lucy J., 15; and Ashar, 13, all born in Maine.


In the 1850 U.S. Census, house carpenter Asher B. Bassford, 45, born Mass., was living in Calais, Maine, with Lucy, 35, born N.B.; Levi S.L., 15; Edward Payson, 13; Laura M., 10; Lucy, 5; and Asher, 3, all born in Maine. Living with them were house carpenter John Martin and John Gillis, both 18, both born N.B.; and Mary Douglass, 26, born Maine.

He came to Calais, ME in 1826. He served in the 1st Brigade, 7th Div. Maine Militia as a musician in 1828 and Sgt. in 1829-1832. He was an architect and master-builder, and was also the chief engineer of the Calais Fire Dept
