Goerge was the fifth child of Herman Dollase and his wife, Auguste Gruenewald. During World War I, he served in the Navy. While in Europe, he became very aware of Anti- German sentiment and decided to change his name to DeLase, a more French sounding variant of his last name, and claimed that the family was from Alsace-Lorainne (in particular Metz, France). George married Fern Ramsey on September 1, 1919. They has one daughter, Elizabeth Georgette. George worked as a lineman for the Michigan State Telephone Company.
