Born in Balenthin, Pomerania, Germany, Herman was the third of nine child born to Peter Dollase and his wife, Charlotte Kunde. In his youth, Herman was a migrant worker who traveled a circuit around the German States all the way over to France with his brothers Albert and Wilhelm. He met Auguste Gruenewald in the German State of Baden. They were married before Novemeber 1881. They came to America in 1884 with the eldest of their seven children. They settled in Watertown,Wis. Herman worked for the railroad. Funeral was from St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Watertown on Nov. 12
