My Grandmother In Law.

History rarely mentions how many Italians fled the chaos of Italy during the World Wars and found safety in South America. Blanca's parents left the beautiful Calabria region in the boot of Italy to make a new home in Argentina. They worked hard and adopted their new home's customs while keeping their Italian heritage in their hearts. They raised their family in the gorgeous countryside of Argentina and instilled a love of family and nature in sweet Blanca. She was raised with her loving sisters and missed them every day of her life. She once spent an afternoon telling me all about her life and how happy she had been growing up.

Blanca held a deep love of birds and always had Love Birds and other sweet little birds to keep her company. In her later years Blanca found a stray guinea hen in her backyard which followed her around as she cared for her garden. She grew luscious tomatoes and herbs which became sauce to accompany her homemade pasta and gnocchi.

Blanca would have enjoyed having a large house filled with happy and plump babies, but she was blessed with only one child. When her husband Edgardo passed away she moved to the United States with her family and became a nurturing and loving Grandmother.

There was a gentle peace about her and a warm and beautiful smile.

As much as the United States could give her a good life, she missed Argentina and her sisters. One day in her 80's she announced she was going home, a few months later she passed away and is now buried with her family.

A sweet memory: After Blanca passed away I was given a little pink box that contained a note from her. Inside the box was a beautiful gold bracelet and gold ring. She wrote that Edgardo gave her the jewelry as a young bride and together they planned to one day give it to their daughter. With no daughter or granddaughter to give the special jewelry to she wanted me to have them. I can't look at them without wishing she was still with all of us.

Rest in Peace.
