Ara Green Paul, widower, hired Mr. and Mrs. Jim Cochran to keep young Donald Paul. Donald's mother, Gertrude (Gertie) Knight Paul, died when Donald was only three and a half weeks old. Donald Paul changed his name to Donald Cochran in 1943. All records, school, marriage, Army, and children's names are under Cochran.

NOTE by Betty Smith Beard: Mrs. Jim Cochran was Theodocia Ann E. St. Clair GAINES Cochran, mother of William Henry Gaines who married Rosa Paul. Rosa Paul was Ara Green Paul's sister, therefore the aunt of Donald Paul. So Donald's aunt's mother-in-law "adopted" Donald. He is listed on the 1920 census as an orphan, and on the 1930 census as their adopted son. He married under the name Cochran in 1937.
