John enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 in Rochester, New York. He fought in the Battle of Normandy at Omaha Beach between June 6, 1944 and June 30, 1944. After the war he spent two years in the Pacific and in Japan. John was a Seaman First Class. He was a World War II Navy Seabee Veteran.
John married Ruth Norbertine Kuchman on June 14, 1947 in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. They had two children.
