Mary Ann Burr was born December 14, 1846 in Risdon, Illinois, the daughter of Augustus Martin Burr and Elizabeth Briggs, both of Illinois. She married George Francis Chase after he returned from military service during the Civil War and they raised 13 children, the first 12 born in Kansas. Their youngest, Chester Harmon Chase, was born January 1, 1890 in Oroville, California. Mary Ann and her husband, and at least two of their children are buried at Old Oroville Cemetery.
