William C. "Bill" Duffy, 91, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on October 15th, 2011. A resident of Cornwall for two years, he was formerly of South Carolina, New Rochelle, and Wheeling, IL.
Born on June 10, 1920 in Walton, IL, he was the son of the late Edward and Margaret Loan Duffy. After graduating high school, Bill attended Sterling Business School in Illinois. Afterward, he was inducted into the United States Army. Bill faithfully served his country during World War II as a member of the 28th Infantry Division. He was wounded in combat during the Battle of Hurtgen Forest in 1944. For his valor, Bill was recognized with several medals including the Purple Heart.
Upon his return home, he enrolled in the University of Illinois and in 1948 received his Bachelors Degree in Business Administration and became a Certified Public Accountant.
On May 18, 1957, he married his best friend, Nancy Thiell at St. Jerome's Church in Chicago, IL. In 1962 they moved to New York , and Bill worked as a CPA for several companies in both Chicago & New York before retiring in 1985.
Bill and Nancy moved to South Carolina in 1985 and truly enjoyed many years of retirement before returning to New York in 2007. Bill was an avid golfer, reader and poker player who also enjoyed history. He served as a treasurer and director on several boards and was active in many associations including the Westchester County A.O.H., Disabled American Veterans Association and Bombay Bicycle Club.
In addition to his wife, Nancy, who survives at home, Bill is also survived by his daughter, Meg Cusumano & her husband Guy of Maybrook; his son, Jim Duffy & his wife Adrienne of Hopewell Junction; his grandchildren, Kate & Eileen Janeczko and Jessica & Matthew Duffy; his sister-in-law, Alberta Duffy of Dixon, IL; and many nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother & sister-in-law Francis and Esther Duffy, and his brother Harold Duffy.
Bill will always be remembered as a loving and caring person. All that knew him recognized that he was a special individual that touched the lives of many and always thought of others before himself.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home, followed by interment with Military Honors at the Orange County Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Goshen.
