Born on July 26, 1919, third daughter of John C. Ryan Jr. and Lucy Stripling Ryan, Anne, "Rooney" to family and friends, grew up on Fort Worth's south side, attended Daggett Elementary and graduated from Central High School, now Paschal High School, in 1936. A year at Texas Christian University followed by two years at Smith College completed her formal education, but studies in art, theater, literature and music continued throughout her active life. Her time at Smith College was particularly fulfilling and she maintained lifelong friendship with classmates.

Anne was presented at the Assembly Ball in 1939 and represented Fort Worth at Galveston's Fiesta that same year. During World War II she served as a nurse's aide. After the war, she and two friends took an apartment in New York City, where she worked for Life Magazine answering "Life Letters" and enjoyed the advantages and attractions of New York City for two years.

Returning home to Fort Worth, Anne worked in retail, advertising and insurance until she married William Ernest Chilton Jr. in 1956. She served on the board of advisers of the Reeder School of Theatre and Design, as treasurer of the Jewel Charity Ball Committee and vice president of the Assembly.

She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, the Fort Worth Club, River Crest Country Club, the Junior League of Fort Worth, the Mental Health Association, the Fort Worth Art Association, Amon Carter Museum and the Kimball Art Museum. As a Junior Leaguer, she was instrumental in establishing the Bargain Box, forerunner of the Double Exposure Shop.

Anne loved to travel and entertain. Her adventurous, artistic and creative spirit was exemplified by travels in Europe, Mexico and the United States. She channeled her artistry and creativity into needlework and beautiful parties, particularly family holiday gatherings.

The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to Clara Mae Warren, staff members of Fireside Lodge Healthcare Center and American Hospice and the multitude of caregivers to Anne during the past 11 years for their loving, compassionate care.

We shall all miss her love and laughter, but are grateful to God that she has been delivered to everlasting residence in heaven.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, John C. Ryan III, and sister, Elizabeth Ryan Bond.

Survivors: Husband of 49 years, William Ernest Chilton Jr.; daughter, Claire Ryan Chilton; son, John Lawrence Chilton and his wife, Karen Kiatta Chilton; sister, Lucy Ryan Muse; brother, Edwin Stripling Ryan and his wife, Joan Kelly Ryan; sisters-in-law, Nancy Royall Ryan, Mary Belle Chilton Phillips and her husband, James Olcott Phillips, and Jane Jester Woods; grandchildren, William Lawrence Chilton, Kathleen Elizabeth Chilton, Madeline Anne Chilton, Margaret Ryan McQuitty and Holly Boone McQuitty; and beloved cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
