Apparently left his wife and five children to go west to California during the Gold Rush and never return. He took work as a laborer in San Francisco and on ranches in Tuolumne County before remarrying, perhaps, without divorce. Before this, in 1863,however, he attempted to have his unusual name changed by a bill in the California State Senate to John Henry Cecil. Apparently, the name change was never acted upon. He died of a stroke on his successful ranch on Rough and Ready Creek southeast of Sonora. The Burden Undertaking Company buried him 17 Aug 1870 under burial permit #232.
