Dale Lynch Buffington was born January 12, 1924 in Albion, Iowa to his parents, Earl and Cora Buffington. At the age of 18, he went to work for Douglas Aircraft putting glass on B-17’s. Dale was drafted in 1943 to the Army Air Corp. He was a ball turret gunner (belly gunner)on a B-17G. At the end of May, 1944, he and his crew transferred to England. He was assigned to the 8th Air Force 390th BG, 568th Squadron. Dale’s first bombing mission was June 6, 1944. On July 29, 1944, on his 22nd mission, Dale’s B-17 was hit after dropping bombs on Merseburg, Germany. The name of his aircraft was the Shack Rat. He spent the rest of the war in a German POW camp, Stalg Luft No. 3. They were liberated May 11, 1945 by the US Army.

On February 4, 1950, Dale married Rose Landeen. They had a son named David.

On January 4, 1951 Dale died in Rochester, Minnesota from a fall while at work. He was baptized Roman Catholic just before his death. He left behind his wife, Rose; son, David; and two stepdaughters as well as his mother, Cora; brother, Virgil; and two sisters, Maureen and Dorothy.
