U.S. Congressman. He was a successful as a cigar maker, a labor organization officer (1902-12) and served as president of the Missouri State Federation of Labor (1912-32). In 1933, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-third Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1941. After leaving Congress, he resumed office as president of the Missouri State Federation of Labor until his retirement in May 1953.
