Served in the Company C of the 8th Indiana from it's very beginning. His brother Marion served with him.
When it was reformed after the first 100 days he persuaded his brother John to join. Since he had already served he was promoted to Sgt and was over his brother. (Marion joined the 2nd Indiana Cavalry)
He fought at Rich Mountain, Pea Ridge, the Vicksburg campaign and in the Louisiana bayous. In August 1863 he was stationed at Brashear City (now Morgan City), Louisiana. While out in the Gulf of Mexico fishing for food for his men a storm capsized his boat and he drowned. His body was never recovered. His bother John took over his duties in the company.
This cemetery has a monument to veterans on which William's name appears.
