O.E. Carlstrom, Twice Attorney General, Dies
Aledo,Il March 6, 1946

Oscar E. Carlstrom, 69, twice Republican attorney general of Illinois and four times candidate for governor, died at his home here last night. He was born on a farm near Aledo, the son of Swedish immigrants and later became Aledo's city attorney, and state's attorney of Mercer Co. In 1899 he enlisted in the 39th volunteer US infantry, and served 16 months in the Phillipines. In 1916, he enlisted in the 6th Illinois infantry, and served overseas as a captain in the field artillery. His first race for governor was in 1920. He announced his candidacy again in 1928, but withdrew before the election. He ran again in 1932, and 1944 opposed Gov. Green in the Republician Primaries.

Backed by Len Small, He was elected to his first term as attorney general in 1924, and was re-elected in 1928. He was the first elected attorney general with the support of Len Small forces. One of the famous law suits that he settled out of court was the controveersy with the Illinois Central rainrrrrroad (?Rail Road) over compenmsation due the state under its charter. He accepted payment of $1,500,000, surrendering some of the points for which some of his predecessors had contended. He was a member of the Illinois state tax commission from 1921 to 1925.

Active in Vets' Groups, He was a former national commander of the United Spanish War Veterans. He attended three Paris conferences for the organization of the American Legion. He was a former commander of post 121, and a member of the department executive committee representing the 14th congressional district.

He leaves his widow, Mrs Alma C. Carlstrom; a daughter, Miss Marilyn Lucille Carlstrom, and a son, Charles H. Carlstrom. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the First Presbyterian church at Aledo.
