Private First Class Bustle was a member of Company I, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division. He was seriously wounded while fighting the enemy in Korea and died of those wounds on July 25, 1953. Private First Class Bustle was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

PFC Richard E. Bustle died of multiple framentation wounds, possibly from a grenade, in the last ground action by the Corps in the Korean War. He almost came home.
