RESPECTED WOMAN IS CALLED BY DEATH

Mrs. Abigail E. Butler, wife of James Butler, resident of Charleston since February, 1896, and residing all of the thirty-five years of residence here in the family home, 1412 Fourth street, died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. O.F. Sprout, 300 Polk street, at 11 o'clock Saturday night. Death is attributed to the infirmities that are incident to old age. Mrs. Butler, who was being cared for by Mrs. Sprout, a well known Charleston nurse, had been removed to the Sprout home in order that Mrs. Sprout could give her closer and better attention.

The funeral services were held at the Charleston Cumberland Presbyterian church, at 10 o'clock Monday morning with the Rev. U.S. Ferguson, brother of Mrs. Butler, assisted by the Reverend E.J. Sloan, Charleston, officiating. Following the largely attended and impressive services the remains, escorted by the bereaved family, a large number of friends and citizens, were taken overland to Cumberland county where interment was made in the Tippett cemetery.

Abigail E. (Ferguson) Butler born in Cumberland county, June 2, 1855, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Ferguson, prominent and influential citizens of that community. On March 3, 1875, she was married to James Butler. Seven children blessed their union, but six have preceded the mother to the grave--a son, Grover, dying in Springfield, Ill., seventeen days ago. She is survived by her husband, a son, Lee Butler, of Charleston, two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Roberts, Arcola, Ill., Mrs. Leroy Melton, Greenville, Ill., three brothers, Benjamin P. Ferguson, Champaign, Ill., U.S. Ferguson, Henning, Ill., and C.W. Ferguson, Taylorville, Ill., and seven grandchildren.

Mrs. Butler became converted to the cause of the Master when she was fifteen years of age and has always lived a true and consistent Christian life. She was the ideal mother and wife, her home being her one great object of her life. She was well known, highly respected and loved by her neighbors and friends. Her home life was a happy and contented one.

Mr. and Mrs. Butler came to Charleston in February, 1896, and took up their residence at 1412 Fourth street, which has been their home ever since.
