U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1836 and commenced to practice law in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He was prosecuting Attorney of Middlesex County in 1841, president of the Bank of New Jersey and Mayor of New Brunswick, (1846-47). In 1847, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirtieth and Thirty-first Congresses, serving until 1851. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law, was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1856 and a judge of the New Jersey Supreme Court, (1859-66). Moving to Minnesota in 1868, he was a member of the Minnesota State Senate, (1872-73) and judge of the third judicial district of Minnesota, from 1873, until his death at age 71.
