US Senator. A member of the Republican Party, he served in the US Senate from Minnesota for one term from March 1883 until March 1889. Born in Illinois, in 1857 he moved with his parents to Connecticut and attended local country schools and the Phillips Academy at Andover, Massachusetts. He served in the Union Army during the American Civil War and was employed as a clerk in Washington DC. In 1864 he returned to Connecticut and engaged in agriculture and the lumber business. In 1868 he moved to Stillwell, Minnesota and engaged in lumbering and the general manufacture of railroad cars and agricultural machinery. From 1872 until 1875 he served in the Minnesota State Senate and served in the Minnesota State House of Representatives in 1878 and again in 1881. In 1882 he was nominated by the Republican party to run for the US Senate and he was elected. During his term in the US Senate, he was the Chairman of the Committee to Examine Branches of the Civil Service and the Committee on Railroads. From 1883 to 1884 he served as the Chair of the Republican National Committee. In 1888 he was not re-nominated for US Senate and was succeeded by Republican William D. Washburn. After leaving office, he resumed his business interests. He died at the age of 59.
