Revolutionary War Patriot, John Deats,was just 17 years old when he enlisted in the Somerset County, New Jersey Militia in the Spring of 1776. As was the custom of New Jersey Militia Minute Men, he served several tours of duty, as needed, during the Revolutionary War. Pvt. Deats fought in the Battle of Germantown on October 4, 1777. Following the Revolutionary War, in May through Sept. of 1779, he served in Sullivan's Expedition Against the Indians. Soon after returning home, he moved to Lower Mt. Bethel, Northampton Co. PA. where he took up farming and raised his family of seven children. He continued to serve in the Pennsylvania Militia for several years thereafter.
