Anna Mae Ragland was born Anna Mae Anderson. She was the child of Margaret "Maggie" Givens and Jesse James Anderson who preceded her in death. She was later adopted by her mother's best friend Lula Young and became a Young. Even though Anna's birthday was listed as January 25, 1935, this is not accurate due to the documented birth date of a sibling. She was birthed inside her mother's home and delivered by a midwife. She was preceded in death by her siblings Cynthia Lewis, George Williams II (along with twin sister), Georgia Williams, Ethel Williams, Elizabeth Williams, James Anderson, Yvonne Anderson, Charles Anderson, and Donnell Givens; she was the fourth youngest of 10 living children (total of 25). Anna departed this life on October 23, 1999 at 10:30 pm. Anna was united in holy matrimony to Marshall Ragland in 1962. Together they raised five children in this union. At an early age, she was a faithful member of Consolation Baptist Church under the patronage of Rev George Roach and then Rev. Craig E. Edwards, and most recently a member of Calvary United Methodist Church under the pastoral of Rev William C. Davis. Anna was a graduate of Woodward High School, class of 1953. She was employed by the Board of Education where she worked and taught for 27 years at Clifton Elementary School. She also worked at the Cincinnati Main Library downtown during the summers. She was an active member of the Woodward Class of the 50's Alumni. As an Alumni member, she was dedicated in raising funds for scholarships for future Woodward graduates. She was equally as devoted a member of Calvary United Methodist Church where she served as a member of the Trustees, Voices of Calvary Choir, and the Van Ministry. In her spare time she enjoyed decorating, drawing, and calligraphy writing for the various committees and activities that she was involved in. She leaves to cherish her memories: Marshall Ragland; Children from a previous union with Leonard Padgett- Camilla Young (Edward Smith) and Johnny Young and children with Marshall Ragland: Charles Ragland (April), Maxanne Williams (Christopher), Lateefah Ragland, and a special God Daughter Theia Adefris; fifteen grandchildren: Mecca Young, Shanaid Smith, Edward Smith III, Shonda Butler, Russell, Johnnae Young, Anika Clark, Brittany Clark, Jasmine Thompson, Sharice Clark, Jajaun, Michael, Christopher Williams, Jessica Williams, Chauncey Ragland, Kevin Woods Jr., Aramenah Kinney, Na'Eemah Ragland,, Prince Jackson and Davet Shelton Sr. Great grandchildren: Mecal Young, Whitney Cooper, Deandre Young, Emari and Queen Ragland, and Davet Shelton Jr. Two sisters: Betty Williams (Claude), and Bernice Williams and a host of other relatives and friends.
