Bethany - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday for George W. Ehrler, 59, a retired deputy chief for the New Haven Fire Department, who died Wednesday, April 26, 1995, at Yale-New Haven Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Mary Coutts Ehrler and was a resident of 48 Deerfield Lane.
The funeral will leave the Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St., New Haven at 12:15 p.m. The Mass will be in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Center Road, Woodbridge, at 1. Burial will be in East Side Cemetery, Woodbridge.
Mr. Ehrler, son of the late William J. and Sadie L. Dunn Ehrler, was born in New Haven July 8, 1935. He was a New Haven resident for 54 years before moving to Bethany in 1990.
He was appointed to the Fire Department on June 1, 1959, after serving as a member of Fairmont Association (Annex Fire Department) for three years.
He was promoted to lieutenant Jan. 1, 1968, and captain Jan. 2, 1974. At various times, he served with Engine Co. No. 5, Hook & Ladder Co. 1, Hook & Ladder Co. 6, Engine Co. 9 and as shift commander with Engine Co. 6.
On Sept. 8, 1982, he was promoted to batalion chief and assigned to West Battalion headquarters. He advanced to deputy chief June 13, 1984, and headed up the Second Division until his retirement on February 21, 1990.
He received the Medal of Merit, the Fire Department's third highest award for bravery in a double rescue from a fire in 1977. In 1980, he was honored by Box 22 Association as its "Fireman of the Year." He was a member of New Haven Firefighters Local 825 and the Connecticut Fireman's Association.
He was the chairman of the membership committee of the Bethany Wanderers and served as Vice President of Box 22 Associates, Inc. He served as a corporal with the Army in Alaska as part of the Defense Early Warning system.
Beside his wife, he leaves two sons, Keith H. Mallinson of Woodbridge and Brian D. Mallinson of Rutland, Vt.; a daughter, Donna R. Shea of Waterbury; a brother, William J. Ehrler of North Branford; three sisters, Sadie Glenewinkel of North Branford, Barbara Dolloff of North Easton, Mass., and Elizabeth DePalma of New Haven; and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Genevieve Santacroce.
