Donald Lloyd Bernath, born 24 Feb 1939 in Wauseon, Fulton, Ohio. He graduated from Wauseon High School in 1957. He graduated from Purdue University in 1961. He received his commission in the Marine Corps following graduation. He spent six months at Quantico, Virginia for officers training. In January 1962 he was assigned to Camp LeJeune, N.C. Fleet Marine Force. He was named Company Commander in October where he served for three months. Donald was then attached to Headquarters until March 1963. At this time he became an aerial observer, serving in this capacity until December 1963 when he entered Naval Flight School at Pensacola, Florida. He finished Flight School in May 1964 and was transferred to Training Squadron Nine, United States Naval Auxiliary Air Station in Meridian, Mississippi. He died in the service of his country at Meridian, MS following the crash of his Navy Jet Trainer at the Naval Auxiliary Air Station.
Funeral services were conducted from the First Methodist Church, Wauseon, Ohio on Sunday afternoon, 12 Jul 1964.

We came from the same home town. His parents were well respected members of the community. They played Pinochle with my parents.
