Charles H. Allen was son of Marston Allen (1789-1868) who opened the first chemical plant in the State of Ohio. C.H. Allen inherited his father's knack for chemistry and expanded upon the family's wholesale drug business. A lifelong Glendale, Ohio resident, Allen purchased a plot of land from his father and developed. The land was rumored by Glendale historians to have been used as safe passage for the Underground Railroad. Allen was also a dedicated Swedenborgian, a particular Christian denomination, and through his donations the First New Jerusalem Church was constructed in Glendale.
