~~ MY DAD'S BROTHER ~~

6/20/17 - My Uncle Fred's memorial was transferred to me today. I am so thankful and grateful. I will be adding his bio very soon. I'm praying that my Aunt Pauline Herbert's memorial will be transferred to me very soon. I would love to have all of my Dad's family together, and be able to add bios, update information, and arrange photos.

I'm going to write a few thoughts quickly. Please forgive me if if things are out of order. I will correct soon.

Staff Sargeant, United States Marine Corps, WWII

Uncle Fred was onboard the USS Nevada, Pearl Harbor. His ship was bombed and torpedoed. He was injured, but he survived. He went on to fight in many furious battles in the South Pacific. His life was spared many other times. The second picture on the right, my Uncle Fred is on the right, a Marine buddy on the left. In that battle with the Japanese, Uncle Fred was saved by his helmet when a 50 caliber round hit him. He lived with a lot of shrapnel in his body. We don't know who took the second picture, or when and where. It was published in a newspaper asking if anyone knew who the Marines were. A fellow Marine identified my Uncle Fred. A Herbert first cousin of my Dad and Herbert uncles, died at Pearl Harbor. He was onboard the USS Arizona.

When my twin cousins were six months old, their Daddy was killed instantly by lightning. He was outside taking diapers off of the clothesline. It wasn't stormy, and the lightning came out of nowhere. He experienced near death many times in WWII, and then to be killed by lightning at home......... It is so tragically sad. It is ironic because Uncle Fred's Daddy, my Grandpa, was killed by electricity when Fred was eight years old. During a snow storm my Grandpa saw someone in the snow. He went out to help him. A downed electric line in the snow was invisible. It had killed his neighbor, and electricity flowed through his neighbor when my Grandpa tried to pick him up. He was killed instantly. My Grandma was left with five children under the age of eight. My Dad was four years old. The youngest Herbert child, baby John Henry, died six months after his Daddy died. He died in my Grandma's arms. They think he had Scarlett or Rheumatic fever. Such sad and tragic times.

When Uncle Fred died, my Dad and Mom gathered my Grandma and drove non-stop from San Diego to Missouri. They recalled the journey so vividly, I could feel their pain and anguish. They were so anxious to get there, and old Route 66 wasn't a quick trip. Two lanes, and parts of it were still dirt. Many other family members traveled in other cars to caravan to Missouri. I cannot imagine the sadness and despair.

My Uncle Fred was married to my Aunt Roberta. She survives. After my Uncle Fred died, my Aunt never remarried. She never fully recovered from the loss of the one and only love of her life. After Uncle Fred died, Aunt Roberta's only goal in life was to raise their two beautiful baby girls.

My Uncle and Aunt had twin girls, my first cousins. They are married and have children. Even though they didn't have the joy and happiness of knowing their Dad, they missed his absence throughout their lives, and still do today.

My Uncle was killed before I was born. I didn't have the joy knowing him. I feel like I know him through the wonderful stories from my Grandma, my Dad, and Uncle Herb and Aunt Pauline. Everyone said he was a joy just like my Dad and Uncle Herb. They were so honorable, loving, and dedicated to God, family, and country.

Dad - James Draper Herbert
Mom - Minnie Thompson Herbert

Uncle Fred's siblings:
Lemon Herbert, WWII, my Uncle Herb
Everett Herbert, WWII, my Dad
Pauline Herbert Norris, my Aunt
John Henry, died at six months of age, Scarlett or Rheumatic fever

** Our family was struck by unimaginable tragedy within two months of each other. Uncle Fred was killed by lightening in July. My Moms brother, my Uncle Coy was killed two months later, in September. He was killed when a drunk driver hit him head on. As is usually the case, the drunk driver survived.
