Merle J. Hartley, the son of Jesse and Carrie (Clyde) Hartley was born on October 26, 1924 in Garden City, South Dakota. He was baptized in the United Methodist Church in Garden City, where he grew up and attended country school. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from october 18, 1945 until November 17, 1946.


On October 26, 1950 he married Annamae Nichols in the parsonage of the Methodist Church in Garden City,South Dakota. The couple farmed northeast of Henry until 1986, when they moved to Watertown. Merle was employed as a custodian at local factories for several years. In recent years he had been employed in maintenance at the Friendship Apartments. Annamae Hartley passed away on March 19, 2001. Merle was a life time member of the First United Methodist Church of Watertown, a member of the Phipps Township Board, and a member of the Heath-Headley Post 0199 of the American Legion of Garden City.

Merle James Hartley passed away on Thursday, August 21, 2003 in Watertown, South Dakota at the age of 78.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and one brother, Harold.

He is survived by his daughters, Linda (Brian) Haan of Watertown, Diann (Rodger) Redmond of Henry, and Dawn (Kevin) Berner of Watertown; his son, Steven Hartley of Henry; one sister, Lorraine Kelly of Clark; three brothers, Jerald (Myra "Mike") Hartley of Clark, Richard H. (Elsie) Hartley of Carson, NV, and Larry (Ruth) Hartley of Pierre; and nine grandchildren.

In Memory of Merle J. Hartley, Funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 26, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Eric Grinager officiating.

Music will be provided by Wendy Hartley-Soloist, Dorothy Brugmman-organist and Bill Dempsey-Bagpiper.
