Per his death certificate: He was the son of Albert Washington Ladd and Mary Ann Owings and the husband of Susan Ratteree Ladd. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage. His occupation: gen merchandize and furniture.

Found in The State (Columbia, SC) 26 October 1953: WINNSBORO, Oct. 25-(Special)-James Washington Ladd, 76, prominent merchant and former clothing store owner in Columbia, died at 5:20 this morning at his home. He had been in declining health for several years and seriously ill for several months. Mr. Ladd was born in western Fairfield county, the son of the late Albert Washington Ladd and Mary Ann Owings Ladd. He was educated in the public schools of the county and at Clemson College. For many years he had owned and operated a furniture and general mercantile business at Strother. Prior to this he owned a clothing store in Columbia and was state agent for Manhattan Insurance Company. Survivors include his widow, the former Miss Amelia Ratteree of Columbia; two daughters, Mrs. Happoldt Neuffer of Abbeville and Mrs. Harry Dunbar of Union; one son, J. Wilkes Ladd of Lancaster, Pa., and Myrtle Beach; one sister, Mrs. J. R. Ragsdale of Blairs; three brothers, Dr. O. Y. Ladd of Danbury, Conn., G. P. of Columbia and G. M. Ladd of Winnsboro; one granddaughter, four grandsons, three great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons.
