Dan Davis completed two years of college before he was drafted into the Army during World War !! four months after he married Juanita Ellis.. They met in Kansas City, Missouri while in high school, when they were 15 years old . Following their wedding on November 21, 1942, they moved the next day to Chicago where Dan was working in one of his father's glider plants.
Dan was first stationed at Santa Anita, California at the horse racing track. The Army took it over during the War and housed men where horses had lived. Dan was transferred to the Air Force in weather training and stationed at Hamilton Field north of San Francisco. Juanita lived first in Monrovia, outside Los Angeles, then moved to Richmond, California and worked in the Richmond Ship Yards. She moved to San Rafael, California for a time before she joined Dan in an apartment on the air base. They were fortunate to be together in the states all of the time he served in the military.
Dan was discharged from the military in 1946 and when their first daughter was four months old, they moved from Kansas City, Missouri to Ames, Iowa where Dan finished college with a degree in Civil Engineering. They bought a 12 room house across from the campus football field and kept 12 GI male roomers. Juanita ran the rooming house and while living there they had their second and third daughters. After graduation Dan worked for two years for the Iowa Highway Commission. Seeking diversity in his engineering, Dan then took a position in 1951 with Brown & Root Construction Company in Houston, Texas. It was the largest construction company in the country at the time.
Their fourth daughter was born in Houston and they lived there until 1962 when they moved to Long Island, New York. Dan and Juanita joined 85 families who moved to New York to establish a Church of Christ on Long Island. Dan took a job with Grumman airplane manufactuer and did some work on the Lunar Module. While living on Long Island, Dan became a lay preacher and started another congregation in Brentwood, New York.
In 1970 Dan was asked by a Pennsylvania Engineering firm to move to Pennsylvania and design sewage treatment plants for small communities. This move took them to Pottsville, Pennsylvania where they bought a home on a lake. A church was started and after a year of meeting in their home the church bought a building.
After a short job for Kodak in Rochester, New York and another in Baltimore, Maryland in 1985 they moved to Reading, Pennsylvania and bought a 30 room house and created a home for the elderly, "Dunken House". Their oldest daugher and husband were partners with them in making it a state licensed business. Wanting to travel they bought an RV and happily traveled all over the U.S., (visiting friends and family), Canada and much of Mexico. The girls and their husbands developed the Personal Care Business and ultimately owned three facilities. Dan lived at Dunken House until his death and then Juanita moved three years later when her children sold the business.
The two of them started three Church of Christ congregations during their lives and lived their lives loving the Lord, each other, their children and grandchildren and others.
