California State Assemblyman and State Senator. Ken graduated from Fresno State College in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture. He graduated from U.C.L.A. School of Law in 1963 and was admitted to the California State Bar in June 1963. He served in the State Assembly representing Fresno County from 1971 to 1978. He lost the governor race to Edmund G. "Jerry" Brown in 1978. He served as a State Senator from 1978 to 1998. He was Chairman of the Republican Senate caucus from 1978 to 1983 and Republican leader of Senate from 1987 to 1995. Awards he received include CSU Alumnus of the Year Award in 1983 and CSU Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999. Cal State Fresno created the Maddy Institute to help and inspire college students to work in public service. The Oak Tree Racing Association named a stakes race in his honor in 2000, which took place at Santa Anita Park. UC at Davis is home to an equine drug testing laboratory named after Maddy, a joint venture between the Veterinary Medical School and the California Department of Food and Agriculture's Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory. He was known for his open candor, and his integrity. He died of cancer.
