Robert "Bob" Kuhlmann, a lifelong resident of the Ellenville area passed away Thursday October 20, 2011 at Vassar Brothers Hospital, at the age of 80. He was the son of Homer C. and Estelle Eckert Kuhlmann.

Bob was a proud graduate of Ellenville High School Calls of "49". He also earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Cornell University and Master's Degree from SUNY New Paltz. Bob retired from the New York State Department of Correctional Services in 1999 after 41 years of service. He began his career as a prison guard following his discharge from the U.S. Army. He left to attend Cornell University, and upon graduation, returned to the Department serving as a Teacher, Educational Supervisor, Educational Director, Assistant Director and Director with the Narcotic Addiction Control Commission, Superintendent of Woodbourne Correctional Facility, and Superintendent of Sullivan Correctional Facility. He retired from the Department as a Supervising Superintendent.

Bob was an active member of his community, serving many years as Chairman of the Board of the Ellenville Regional Hospital. He was also a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Noonday Club, where he was a recipient of The Citizen of the Year Award, a lifetime member of Pioneer Company #1, BPO Elks Lodge 1971, Wawarsing Masonic Lodge #582, the Shawangunk Country Club, Wawarsing Sportsmen's Association, Ulster County Legislature, Fantinekill Cemetery Association and Former Chairman of the Town of Wawarsing Republican Committee.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 57 years, Carolyn Wilklow Kuhlmann; daughter, Pamela Kuhlmann; nieces, Teresa Spence and Mary Edwards; nephew, John Kuhlmann, and several great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Homer Kuhlmann.

A family statement reads "Bob loved life, people and laughter. He had a favorite saying, a day without laughter is a day wasted".

Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 23, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Loucks Funeral Home, 79 No. Main Street, Ellenville, NY 12428.

A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, October 24, 2011 at the Ellenville Methodist Church, 85 Canal Street, Ellenville at 10:00 a.m. The Rev. Larry Powell will officiate. Interment will follow at Fantinekill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ellenville Regional Hospital, 15 Healthy Way, Ellenville, NY 12428.
