Charles H. Steel was a member of HQ Company, 192nd Tank Battalion. He was sent to the Philippine Islands and fought on Bataan, against the Japanese, from December 1941 until April 9, 1942, when he became a Prisoner of War.

Steel took part in the Bataan Death March and was held as a Prisoner of War at Camp O'Donnell and Cabanatuan. He was later sent to Japan on a "hell ship" and was held at Fukuoka #17 until liberated at the end of the war.
