Lewis Joe Rayburn, 57, Nevada, MO, passed away Monday morning, October 17, 2011 at his home in Nevada following a lengthy illness. He was born January 25, 1954, in Humansville, MO, to Billy Joe Rayburn and Doris June Wooldridge Rayburn. He married Kathy L. Wilson on July 10, 1971, in Horton, MO and she survives of the home.


Joe came to Nevada at the age of five and attended Nevada schools. He worked for 3-M in Nevada for 19 ½ years until his retirement due to disability. Joe played and loved the game of baseball and beginning at the age of 15 would go on to umpire games for over 42 years for little leagues, high school baseball and softball, and Nevada Griffons Baseball. In recent years Joe was the Tournament Director and also the Umpire–In-Chief at Champion Diamonds for the past nine years which had become a great source of pride for him these past few years. Joe was a member of the Horton Methodist Church.


Survivors, in addition to his wife Kathy, include three daughters, Kathi Jo Cain and her husband Jerry, Milo, MO, Angie Piper and her husband Tom, Scott Air Force Base, IL, and Shannon Rayburn, Lincoln, IL; five grandchildren, Kieran Cain, Keilah Cain, Spencer Piper, Tucker Piper, Sawyer Piper; two sisters, Cheryl Swink and her husband Charlie, Stotesbury, MO, Pam Smith, Nevada, and two brothers, Jim Rayburn and his wife Carrie, Nevada, and Mike Rayburn and his wife Sue, Liberal, MO; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter, Chanci Jo Cain.


Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 21, 2011, at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada, MO, with Lawrence Cripps officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. on Thursday evening at the funeral home. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at the funeral home. Joe Rayburn Benefit will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 22, 2011, at the Nevada Eagles Lodge.


Those who wish may contribute in his memory to the Vernon County Cancer Relief or the Horton Methodist Church in care of Ferry Funeral Home.
