Roland was one of eleven children born to David Birks and his wife, Phebe Turner. He was married to Surelda Lackey; a daughter of James Lackey and his wife, Elizabeth Brothers. Roland and Surelda were married about 1870 in Marshall County, Iowa. They had two daughters. Roland farmed in Jefferson Township of Marshall county, Iowa.

OBITUARY NOTICE: The Evening Times-Republican of Marshalltown, Iowa. Article dated August 29, 1917. Excerpt, "ROLAND BIRKS DEAD Pioneer of County Dies at Daughter’s Home Near Laurel. ... Roland Birks died of uremic poisoning, from which he had suffered a week, at 6 o’clock this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. D. Dunlap, ten miles south of the city. Mr. Birks was born Nov. 14, 1850 {sic?}, in Illinois, and came with his parents to Iowa as a child. The family settled in Timber Creek township, four and one-half miles southeast of Marshallton. He was a member of the Christian church. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. W. D. Dunlap, where he died, and Mrs. J. Alexander of near Ferguson; one brother, Jerry Birks of Oregon, and two half-brothers, Charles Birks of Chicago and Lee Birks of this city. ... The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Christian church at Ferguson. Burial will be in Timber Creek cemetery."
