Elizabeth James West's brother, Robert S James, was the father of outlaws Frank and Jesse James. According to family history, when Robert S James died in the gold fields California in 1850, Elizabeth's husband Tillman Howard West was appointed guardian of Frank and Jesse.

Elizabeth James was the daughter of John M. James b. 1775 in VA and Mary Polly Poor b. about 1790. She had the following siblings: Mary, William, John R., Robert Sallee, Nancy Gardner, Thomas Martin (Click on: Thomas Martin James.), and Druty Woodson James.

She married Tillman Howard West b. about 1815, in about 1837 in Logan Co., KY; they had the following children: Luther Virgil, Mary Mourning, Henry Clay, Nancy Woodson, Oscar Dunreath, Richard James (Click on: Richard James West.), and William Newton West.

She was the aunt of the famous outlaws: "Jesse & Frank James."
