At age 14, Ada was immigrated to Canada by Dr. Barnardo Homes. She arrived at Quebec City on October 22, 1892 aboard the S.S. Sardinian, and was brought by train to the Hazlebrae home in Peterborough, Ontario. From there, she was indentured out to work on the farm of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Humphries.
Her death was noted in "Ups and Downs"— A Monthly Journal published under the auspices of Dr Barnardo's Homes. Toronto, March 1, 1896. Vol. 1, No. 8.
BARKER Ada, age 18, October 1892 party, died at Hastings on January 20. She had been in the employ of Mr and Mrs Adam Humphries since coming to Canada, and is buried at Little Lake Cemetery. Cause: pneumonia. "Strange to say, just 2 days before Ada passed away, the aged grandfather, in the home where she was living, had suddenly met his death through an accident in the same house, so there was, indeed, a sad household during those days."
