Obituary, DeRuyter Gleaner of June 21, 1917. page 1:

Benjamin F. Lee was born in Cuyler, then called Truxton, Cortland County, New York, April 13, 1846, died in Cuyler, June 15, 1917.

Mr. Lee was the son of Benjamin and Lucy Whitmarsh Lee, whose forefathers were from New England, and among the pioneer settlers in this locality.

He attended the district school and the DeRuyter Academy after which he taught school for several years, and while teaching in Keeney Settlement, his school was said "to excel any in the town for advanced education."

In early life he evinced a fitness for public service, serving as Justice of the Peace four years, Supervisor six terms and Chairman of the Board three terms.

In 1894 he was elected a member of the state legislature from Cortland county and served the people well in that capacity. He was a member of the school board for many years, and of the Cuyler Grange.

The people of Cuyler testify that he was a helper in the Methodist Episcopal church, of which he was a member and liberal in the support of the Gospel and every good work.

August 11, 1891, he married Miss Jessie M. Lane of Lincklaen, who survives him. Of this union were born four children; Elsie Mae, B. F., Pauline and G. W.. He leaves also a brother, George W. Lee, and a sister, Miss Eunice Lee, both of Cuyler.

The sons attended Syracuse University for the past two years and the family occupied a pleasant hom on Lancaster Avenue during the winter.

Mr. and Mrs. Lee traveled extensively, both in this country and abroad, and his genial and friendly manner won him a host of friends.

The funeral services were held at his late home in Cuyler, on Monday, June 18, at 2 p. m., and very largely attended. Among those from out of town were: Mrs. E. H. Lee and Misses Ethel and Lula Potter of Syracuse, Mr. and Mrs. Grant Gardner and daughter, Doris of Canastota, Mr. Frank Sanders of Cortland and many from all the surrounding towns.

The flowers were many and beautiful. The funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. N. L. Campbell of Cuyler, assisted by Rev. T. F. Harris of Erieville, Rev. Howard Bacon of Lysander, former pastors, and Rev. Ivan J. Howland of Syracuse, a personal friend.

Following the services, all that was mortal was laid to rest in Cuyler Cemetery.
