Born in the house now listed as the Stanton/Rucker House on the Nat.Hist.Register, Ernie was raised in Grosse Ile, Michigan. He studied at Dartmouth College and graduated from Cornell with a degree in chemical engineering. At the onset of World War I,he went to France as a volunteer ambulance driver in the American Field Service. He served with S.S.U. 4 for 8 months in 1915-16. After the United States entered the war, he attended Army OTS at Gettysburg Barracks and was commissioned a Lieutenant.

Ernie married Constance Blauvelt on November 20, 1917 in Grosse Ile. He left Gettysburg Dec. 23, 1917 arriving in Liverpool Jan. 7, 1918. He returned to France as a Captain in command of a machine gun company with the 2nd Division in the very same Verdun trenches he served while in the AFS. He did not lose one man in his company.


Capt. Stanton served in the battles of Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne and in the Defensive Sector, was awarded the Purple Heart for having been wounded by shrapnel Post war. He remained in France for a year working on reparations before returning to the USA.

Because he had been gassed in combat, for which he also received The Purple Heart, he could no longer work in the chemical industry. After studying horticulture at the Boyce Thompson Institute, he founded Westcroft Gardens where, for over 60 years, he hybridized many prized rhododendrons and built a beautiful park that remains in Grosse Ile for the enjoyment of all. He and his wife of 68 years had two children. He was the grandson of Brig. Gen. Henry Stanton, g-grandson of Maj. Gen. Alexander Macomb and nephew of "Uncle Will",Brig. Gen. William Stanton.
