Captain Nathan Cobb
Widely Known Owner of Old Cobb's Island Passes Away
Eastville, Northampton County, VA. Jan. 26.
Captain Nathan Cobb, well known to the former visitors at old Cobb's Island, died this morning at his home at Cobb's Landing, in the Eightieth year of his age. Captain Cobb spent nearly his whole life on Cobb's Island. When that little spot of Earth was rescued from the grasp of Old Ocean, it was the Cobb Family that did it, and there that they made their homes for many years. The tidal wave and storm of October 1897, swept away every inhabitable portion of the Island, destroying every house that stood upon it.
The Islanders saved themselves by taking to their boats. After the results of the storm had been observed, all of the inhabitants came to the Main Land and located. Captain Nathan and several others located at Cobb's Landing, where they built nice homes, looking out, as they do, over the water towards the old Island, where all of their past lives had been spent, with all of its associations and memories.
It was here that Captain Cobb spent the past few years, and at last, was called home. He was respected and esteemed by all who knew him. All of those who formerly visited the Islands in the balmiest days, will remember him, for he knew the Ocean's every whim and mood, the habits of the game birds, as well as where the best fishing was to be found, and he loved his Island home with a Sacred Devotion. Besides his infirm wife, he leaves a son, Mr. E. B. Cobb, of this County.
